Person Turning On Thermostat

Your thermostat is a top priority to think about when you’re away from home. Since your HVAC system uses about half of your home’s energy, you naturally want to do something about it for when you won’t be needing it, especially in Fort Myers, FL. Here’s some advice on how to adjust your thermostat when you leave home.

Turn up the Thermostat

Normally, at home, it’s good practice to turn up the thermostat as high as you can tolerate it. But when you’re away, you’ll want to turn it up 5-8 degrees higher in the summer and 10 to 15 degrees lower in the winter.

The general rule is 5 to 10 degrees higher or lower than your usual temperature; too high or too cold and the fan or furnace will work too hard. You’ll also want to set the fan to “auto” so it will only turn on when necessary for cooling and heating.

Consider Getting a Programmable or Smart Thermostat

The beauty of technology allows you the option of a smart thermostat, which has scheduling and Wi-Fi functionality. It’s a great convenience that takes away the hassle of constantly having to adjust your thermostat and reset the timer (if yours has one). Plus, the higher-end ones have diagnostic features and give you details about your energy usage.

Got a Broken Thermostat?

If you’ve done basic troubleshooting to rule out new batteries, the wrong setting, an air filter change or dust, it’s time to have an HVAC professional check it out. The problem could be that either the thermostat is bad and the sensor is faulty or it’s in a bad spot. Either way, an expert will make sure you’re no longer feeling stifled during the muggy Florida days or nights.
