Energy Audit Checklist: Save Money on Air Conditioning Costs

In the Naples, Ft Myers, Cape Coral area, air conditioners typically get a work out through the end of October. If your energy bills were uncomfortably high this summer, an air conditioning energy audit can tell you where you need to make improvements. You can do the audit yourself or have an A/C installation contractor do it for you.
Either way, the items in checklist should be part of the audit:
Part 1: Routine Maintenance
Regular maintenance saves money on your energy bill:
- Change your a/c filter every month
- Set your thermostat to 78 degrees
- Keep your evaporator coils clean
Part 2: Identify Energy Leaks
In a warm climate, leaks allow warm outdoor air to interfere with the cooling process. This is where you should look for leaks.
- The exterior or your home – the walls, windows, roof and doors are the first layer of defense. Be sure that all weather stripping is tight and intact, and that doors and windows seal tightly. Also be sure to check electrical outlets, range hoods, dryer vents, ceiling fixtures, attic entries and exhaust fans for leaks. In attics, look for signs of daylight when the lights are turned off. Any openings around pipes, fixtures and vents should be caulked. Any cracks in the building should be sealed and any damaged windows should be replaced.
- Make sure that you have adequate insulation and ventilation in your attic and eaves. Insulation without ventilation can lead to mildew and mold growth. If you have any doubts about the condition of your roof or insulation, consult with a professional building contractor.
- Check insulation and ductwork for stains or streaks of dirt and dust. Streaking indicates an air leak. Be sure that all ductwork joints are properly sealed. Any ductwork openings that lead outside should be sealed and insulated. Many Florida homes have ductwork in the attic, which is full of hot, humid air; so it is critical that ducts in unconditioned spaces are thoroughly sealed.
Part 3: Install a Programmable Thermostat
A new, programmable thermostat can save you up to 10% on your annual energy bill. Keeping your thermostat set to 78 degrees while you are home is usually the best option for both comfort and energy savings, but a programmable thermostat lets you adjust settings to coincide with the hours that you are home.
