When you live in the Naples, Ft Myers or Cape Coral area of Florida, you quickly learn that air conditioning is not a “luxury,” but a necessity, because without it, your quality of life quickly suffers. Certified Heating & Cooling has years of experience and we see many of the same questions over and over again. Here are 4 most common questions and answers.

  1. Why is my a/c blowing warm air? In most cases, the air handler is running but the outside condenser unit is not. There are a few things you can try to correct this.  First, go to the main breaker panel and flip off both sets of breakers: those for the inside unit and the outside unit. Wait 30 – 60 seconds and then flip them back on. In 3-5 minutes, the thermostat will reset and the system will come back on. An a/c unit blowing warm air is a common scenario in Florida, especially in summer, due to the high number of storms that cause power surges. It’s not uncommon for a power surge to kick off the condenser without tripping the breaker. If turning the breakers off and then on does not work, it could be that the capacitor is not working and this is a more serious problem. In this case, you should turn the thermostat OFF and call your air conditioning installation contractor.
  2. Why won’t my a/c system turn on? First, reset the breakers at the main breaker panel for both your inside and outside units by turning both OFF, waiting 30 to 60 seconds, and then turning both ON again. If the system doesn’t come back on after 5 minutes, check the float switch. Pull the top off of the float switch and look for water inside the PVC line. If water is present, clean out the line or call your air conditioner installer.
  3. There is no display on my thermostat. Why? Most likely, the batteries need to be replaced. If replacing them does not solve the problem, check and flip both breakers at your panel box to reset.  Still not working? Check the float switch (see #2 above) to check for water that may have backed up into the condensation line. Clean out the line or call your ac installation company for assistance.
  4. My A/C is not keeping the house as cool as it used to. What is going on? There are several possible scenarios: Your filter could be impacted with dirt and debris and needs to be replaced. There could be an obstruction in your ductwork or the system could be freezing up. The best way to determine what is needed, is to contact your ac installation contractor. If your system is at least 10 years old, it may be more cost- and energy-efficient to replace the system.
