Have you been thinking of using blown-in insulation to improve your home’s comfort and energy efficiency? If so, you may be wondering how the installation process works. Here’s what you can expect when you hire professionals to add blown-in insulation to the attic of your Fort Myers, Florida, home.
Prep the Space
Before blown-in insulation can be installed, the space needs to be prepped. In some cases, that means using expanding foam or caulk to seal any gaps around holes where pipes and wiring run into the attic. The blown-in insulation itself should take care of any small cracks, expanding to fill them. Fiberglass batting can be installed on the attic hatch to keep air from escaping that way.
Next, vent chutes may need to be installed or repaired. These fixtures allow air to circulate, removing excess moisture and heat.
Finally, once you’ve determined how much insulation you want to add, marks should be drawn on the tresses to indicate the desired level of thickness. These marks will make it easier to achieve an even installation.
Set Up Equipment
Once the space is ready, it’s time to set up the equipment. Blown-in insulation typically requires at least a two-person crew. One person stays on the ground level to feed the insulation into the hopper and control the air mixture to keep the insulation moving through the hoses smoothly. The other operates the hose, spraying the insulation across the attic floor. The two workers can use walkie-talkies or cell phones to coordinate their efforts.
Blow in the Insulation
With everyone and everything is in place, the actual installation can begin. The best approach is to start in the back of the attic and work your way back towards the access door. The person operating the sprayer should wear long sleeves, a particulate respirator, gloves, and eye protection. Any tight or hard-to-reach areas should be done first.
